Dedicated to supporting new work, Development Lab at Theatre in the Mill kicks off a new season this Autumn with a world premier by Yorkshire duo Mark Catley and Aisha Khan. A co-commission with Northern Bullits, BEEP runs at Theatre in the Mill, 3 – 7 November 2009 and is a darkly comic exploration of the life of Baron, the most depressed call centre employee of all.
Developing artists working in new or alternative means, Development Lab is committed to programming new work and supporting those pushing at the boundaries of current practice. BEEP marks the first of six commissions over the next six months from a range of established artists including Lucy Hind and David Toole, Victoria Pratt, Chris Thorpe and Jane Packman.
Alongside these commissions, another Development Lab programme of work, Open Space, enables emerging artists or those with work in early stages of development to use the facilities and expertise that the Mill has to offer. Companies who have already benefited from this programme and showed their work in this way include Loud Mouse Theatre, RashDash and Motion Manual.
Development Lab reopened Theatre in the Mill in Autumn 2008 with: FESTIVAL:01, a month long platform showcasing the full spectrum of work being produced at Theatre In The Mill ranging from physical performance to new writing and the creation of a new pop phenomenon. This was the first partnership between Development Lab and Theatre in the Mill and Development Lab at Theatre in the Mill was born.
The partnership has continued with VILLAGE FETE in Spring 2009. Curated by Development Lab, a marathon 12 hours of performance was accompanied by a traditional village fete complete with face-painting, bunting and barbecue.
